Benefits of the Therapy Dog Program at Pinckney Community Schools
Overview
Therapy dogs in schools have become an essential element of the educational environment, often fostering a positive and supportive atmosphere. These specially trained animals play a role in promoting the well-being and academic success of students. The dogs go from classroom to classroom, interacting with the students and teachers. Along with boosting morale, they can also help with anxiety and depression. The benefits are emotional support, reduced stress, and some academic improvement.
Areas of Benefit
Emotional Support-Therapy dogs help to comfort students who may be upset1. They can help with lowering depression and anxiety and can help to create a comfortable and relaxing learning environment.
Stress Reduction
The presence of therapy dogs has been connected to stress reduction in both students and staff. Interacting with these dogs has been shown to lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress, helping to calm and focus more in a learning environment. If someone is having a mental crisis, all the dogs can be directed towards that person to try to comfort them.
Improved Social Skills
Bringing therapy dogs into schools encourages social interaction between students. The experience of interacting with the dogs, along with a shared love of animals, helps to develop social skills and friendships between students.
Motivation and Engagement
Interacting with therapy dogs often sparks increased motivation and engagement in learning activities. The presence of these animals can make the school experience more enjoyable, encouraging students to participate more in class and activities 2.
Individualized Support
Therapy dogs can provide support for students with special needs. Working with these animals can assist in addressing anxiety, stress, learning disorders⁴, and other difficulties a student might have.
Promoting Physical Health
Other than emotional and mental health benefits, interacting with therapy dogs can have positive effects on physical health, as well. Studies have shown that spending time with animals can lead to lower blood pressure and reduced heart rate, which helps with overall well-being.
Summary
Therapy dogs in schools have had a proven effect on the well-being of students. Not only do they boost morale, but they also lower stress levels along with anxiety and depression. They can provide students with a reason and motivation to come to school. They are great companions and can be used as “rewards” for kids who behave well. They can help people who are struggling and can be used during mental health crises. They are called man’s best friend for a reason.
